Engaging the public square
Merge with the Centre for Public Christianity
In January 2013, we merged with the Centre for Public Christianity (CPX), a media and research company aiming to engage the Australian public with the Christian faith. Through the work of CPX Director, John Dickson, and his staff, we have enhanced our work in advocating for the faith in an increasingly secular environment.
A lot was achieved in promoting the general public’s understanding of Christian faith over the past year. March 2013 saw John Dickson invited to be a panelist on ABC TV’s program Q&A. The panel also included internationally renowned scientist and atheist, Lawrence Kraus. The broadcast was a huge success for CPX and as an example of Christian advocacy in public discourse. The Twitter feed running across the bottom of the screen showed that John won over many of the TV audience with his thoughtful comments and respectful approach. One Tweet read, “I find myself agreeing with the religious guy – call an ambulance.”
Feature in the Weekend Australian Magazine
In the middle of the year the Flying Bible Ministry pilot flew "The Australian" newspaper reporter & photographer to the APY lands in the centre of Australia. The exciting story they were working on was the preservation of Australia's ancient language through Bible translation work. The story on the Pitjantjatjara language group, featured Bible Society’s long time translator for this language, Paul Eckert. The success of building such a great story in partnership with Bible Society Australia resulted in a cover story of 5 pages in a September Weekend Australian Magazine. We praise God for such a unique opportunity for local Bible translation work to be showcased to many around the country in such a widely read publication.
